It's been around awhile ...

Before 1969 it bore the sign "Robins Bait Shop." Then the Grays bought the place and it became "Grays Bait Shop" and it was run by Mrs. Patsy Gray while her husband ran a small engine repair in their garage. Many folks have stories about how nice Mrs. Gray was when they woke her up at 11:00 p.m. at night because they wanted to get some minnows to go fishin'. A long time before it was Robins Bait Shop, it was "Stanley's Bait Shop." I'm not sure how far back it goes, but I've run into many who recall coming in as little kids to get minnows and candy.

In August 1996, the Fauvors purchased it from the Grays, and it became Buck's Bait Shop. Buck added on to the bait shop building, added fish tanks, Ann added on the front porch and started decorating it. The business grew. Boat and RV parking in the back pasture and trucks with their boats or campers (or both) would line the driveway getting bait and supplies to go fishing, camping, and boating. Christmas day afternoon, in 2000, the ice storm that hit Arkansas so hard began. Much of the area was buried in ice, trees shattered, highways blocked, everyone was literally iced in. Power in the Montgomery County area was out for a week. Neighbors helped neighbors. People around came by for water and to warm up, emergency crews got fuel, the Fauvors were running a generator to keep the refrigerator and freezers going, the well pump going for water supply, and their place was heated with wood stoves. Buck had not been feeling well and got sicker during the storm. Hospitals nearby were full and he was finally able to get into the veterans hospital in Little Rock where he passed away in January 2001. |

Ann had also gone to a Hot Springs hospital the same day for surgery, not telling her children how touch and go the surgery would be. She was not sure if she would make it through or not. The night she had her surgery, her husband died. It was at the tail end of the ice storm, power had just barely been restored. Her friends, neighbors, and children got to her place and helped take care of things. A new septic had to be done because the load on the old one during the ice storm caused it to give out. Fallen trees and debris began to be cleared. Livestock and pets were taken care of. Plants ... well, several plants were lost. (And Momma does like her flowers!)

Although Ann tried to keep the bait shop going, she had trouble finding folks willing to take it on and keep at it. Then one of her daughters gave it a go, then a son, then she closed the doors on it for a bit; but never sold off the stock, hoping someday to get it back open again for folks. In September 2004, her oldest daughter Robin moved to Arkansas to help. Working to get the place back in shape, Robin re-opened the bait shop as "Bucks Bait 'n Stuff" on March 18, 2006, with hopes to re-establish the shop to what folks were asking for and expand the services a bit. Bucks has lively bait, frozen bait, and a wide assortment of other bait and lures. Some camping munchies and food stuffs, gear, and if we don't have what you are looking for, let us know. We will try and help you find it. So drop on in and say "Hi!" next time you are passing by!
